Mobile Devices and the Web

Every day more and more people are using their mobile devices such as smartphones to view web content.  What does this mean to you, the website owner?

Well, if you want to go the whole hog and create a stand alone mobile website (like BBC do, see www.bbc.co.uk  versus www.bbc.co.uk/mobile) then be prepared to virtually double your website development costs as you will essentially require 2 separate websites, even if the content is fed from one data source such as Content King.

However, there are low cost options you can consider, either as an interim or as a complete solution (always consider your target audience when making these types of business decisions). 

At Content King we have developed redirection code that checks if the browser viewing the page is on a mobile device.  If so, we redirect the user to a small screen friendly page that presents the content in a much easier to read (and often simpler, less image intensive) layout.  The costs are low as we usually redirect to just one or two mobile specific pages we develop that will deliver navigation lists and news feeds so that the user can still explore the majority of your site with ease.
